Brown-throated Sunbird

Sepilok Forest Edge의 정원에서 탐조하던 중 Brown-throated Sunbird 유조를 만났다. 필드에선 Red-throated Sunbird일 거라 생각했었는데, 다시 보니 Brown인 듯. 올해 태어난 녀석이라 그런지 부리 근처에 노란 부분도 보이고, 깃도 많이 성겼다. 작년에 Sepilok에서 수컷과 암컷을 모두 만났었는데 유조는 처음이라 어려웠다. Brown-throated Sunbird는 수컷을 제외하면 암컷과 유조는 동정이 참 어려운 듯.

이름의 유래  Brown-throated Sunbird [Anthreptes malacensis]    Brown-throated : 갈색의 목을 가진 또는 목의 색깔이 갈색인.    Sunbird : 태양새. 꽃의 꿀을 먹는 소형의 새. 15개속 132종. 벌새처럼 꽃 앞에서 정지비행을 하기도 한다.    Anthreptes : anthos는 꽃, threptes는 ~을 먹는 동물[식물]. 따라서 Anthreptes는 꽃을 먹는 동물이라는 뜻.    malacensis : 말레이시아를 뜻함.    bornensis : 보르네오를 뜻함. 보통 보르네오에만 사는 고유종이거나 고유아종일 경우에 붙여짐.

Borneo의 고유 아종 A. m. bornensis

Brown-throated Sunbird는 동남아시아 전역에 걸쳐 폭넓게 분포하고 있고, IOC 목록에 따르면 14개의 아종이 있다(원래는 16개였으나 IOC 목록에서는 필리핀에 서식하는 아종들을 Grey-throated Sunbird로 분리해서 별개의 종으로 인정하고 있기 때문에 2개 아종이 줄어들었다). 이번에 Sepilok에서 만난 Brown-throated Sunbird는 Borneo 북부(Sabah, Brunai, n Islands)에만 사는 고유 아종이다. 녀석의 학명에 이 부분이 잘 드러나는데, Borneo 북부에 사는 이 아종에는 bornensis가 붙어 있다. 이름에 bornensis가 붙는 경우 대체로 Borneo의 고유종이거나 고유아종일 경우가 많다. Borneo 북부를 제외한 다른 지역엔 A. m. malacensis가 살고 있다.
